Press Release 22 July 2004:

Aussie Volunteers Provide Fresh Milk for Timor Tots

32 pregnant heifers and two bulls are bound for a new life in Timor where they will provide fresh milk for children in the schools and orphanages of the Fuiloro district of Timor Leste.

The herd, which leaves Darwin on Saturday 24 July, has been financed by the Kiwanis Clubs of Australia.

Kiwanis, in association with Salesian Overseas Mission Fund, have established a fully operational dairy at Fuiloro College in East Timor. Students at the college are being trained to run the dairy as well as care for the herd.

The fresh milk will provide important nutritional support for the children of Timor, where 45% of the country's population is under 18 years of age.

A pilot scheme is already providing some milk. When the new herd settles in nearly 5000 children a day will be receiving fresh milk.

"Many children walk over two hours a day to get to school" says project co-ordinator Kevin Wood. "The milk is proving to be an incentive for children to attend school and we are finding that concentration levels are increasing in class as a result of getting the nutritional support" Mr Wood added.

The cows have been financed by various Kiwanis Clubs sponsoring individual cows and paying for the naming rights of their cows - including "Moo" and "Roopna" by the Kiwanis Club of Mooroopna in Victoria, "Alice" by the Kiwanis Club of Alice Springs and "Ding Dong" by the Kiwanis Club of Dingley.

The Kiwanis International Foundation is also providing the major share of financial assistance for the project with USAID who have helped with some new dairy farm equipment.

  • Other News:

In July 2000 the Kiwanis Club of Brighton Vic. in Melbourne accepted a challenge to establish a small, tropics tolerant dairy herd in the eastern half of East Timor. The cows will provide fresh milk to the schoolchildren of the area who walk many kilometres each day to attend school, often with little or no nourishment.

The project involved selecting and rearing the 50 plus heifers; sourcing all of the dairy plant and milk equipment in country Victoria, then transporting and establishing an operational dairy at the Salesian Agricultural College of 1,000 students at Fuiloro near Lospalos, East Timor by July 2002 the children of East Timor have been enjoying fresh milk.

A second herd will leave Australia later this year, when it settles in, milk production will increase to the point where 5000 children a day will be receiving fresh milk

This unique Kiwanis project, now auspiced by Kiwanis Australia District and coordinated by Governor, Kevin Wood from the Brighton Club involves almost 1200 Kiwanians and 50 Clubs / 15 Divisions across Australia and New Zealand.

A network of several hundred volunteers and supporters including the Salesian Overseas Mission, Geelong Christian College, Australian Volunteers International, The Financial Planning Association of Australia and AusAid have now enhanced this initial Club effort to a value well over $250,000 and ultimately $500,000
