Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is supported by the Kiwanis Club of Brighton Vic Inc and the Kiwanis Club of Hampton Vic. On Sunday 17 October 2004 JDRF held their main Fundraising Event: “Walk for a Cure of Diabetes and its Complications”. Albert Park Lake came alive for the 10th JDRF “Walk to Cure Diabetes” as thousands of people banded together to complete the 5km stroll in beautiful Melbourne sunshine. The day could not be more perfect. Among the many volunteers assisting on the day to make this event such a big success, were two Kiwanis Teams from Division 6, the Brighton Team and the Hampton team, both of which included Lt Gov Bryan. Five members from the Hampton Club (plus Bryan) were "on duty" from 7:30am to 11:00 am. The Brighton Team, which comprised of six members, a young daughter of one of them and Bryan Saunders, distributed tons of bottles of water to the thirsty Walkers at the Finish Line, between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm. It was an exhilarating experience and one we keep on coming back to year after year. This “hands-on” activity was the first time for the new Hampton Club, which was chartered in April this year (2004), and the fourth time for the Brighton Vic Club. Each year for the past three years, the Brighton Club has donated a cheque for $500 to JDRF, and many individual members also contributed generously during the month of May “Jelly Baby” campaign. JDRF Guest Speakers are always warmly welcomed to speak at our Club Dinner Meetings each year. General information on JDRF in Australia is available here.
