After almost a century of waiting the First Train finally arrived in Darwin on Saturday 17th January 2004 at 1:28PM (local time) two minutes ahead of schedule.

Kiwanis Clubs of Darwin and Palmerston & Rural District were there to help celebrate the completion of Australias north - south trans continental railway line between Adelaide (South Australia) and Darwin (Northern Territory).

Kiwanians were up early preparing to serve thousands of Hotdogs, Steak Sandwiches, Hamburgers (both with salad), Sausage Sandwiches (all with onions) and Ice Creams to an anticipated hungry crowed of over 8000 that was present at Darwins East Arm Port to welcome and celebrate the arrival of the First (Freight) Train.

What may have been a long day for Kiwanis members, being the most popular food stalls at the venue, the occasion turned out to be a complete sell out and a highly successful project for both Kiwanis Clubs being part of this historic and memorable occasion. Well done Kiwanis.

"The Ghan" passenger trains Inaugural Journey of 3000 kilometres will commence leaving Adelaide on Sunday 1st February 2004, arriving in Darwin at 4:30 PM on Tuesday 3rd February 2004. Once again Kiwanis Clubs will be there to help welcome passengers and celebrate the arrival of the First (Passenger) Train.
